I didn’t notice that I had fallen asleep until I heard my phone going off on the floor next to the bed. I picked it up and my brother was on the other end. “What’s up bro?”
“Yo, I need to holla at you on some serious shit. Can you meet me at Bliss Park in about twenty minutes?” he said.
“Alright, I’ll be there.” I said as I shook my head trying to wake up.
Andrea was still asleep when I finished getting dressed. I woke her up and told her I had to go take care of some business and headed out the door. When I got to the park, Dee, Zo, Antonio, and Reggie were all standing next to the fence.
“So what’s the deal bro?” I said as I gave everybody pound. I could tell that something wasn’t right, it was in the air. Then Alonzo looked at me.
“It’s about ya mom’s. They found her.” He said.
“Where at?” I knew that it was bad from the way that he said it.
“Behind an abandoned house on Washington and Boyd. Police say it was an overdose.” He said.
I couldn’t really think straight while Zo was telling me everything, but I wasn’t about to let myself break. “So where’s she at now.” I said, trying to hold my composure.
“She’s at the hospital morgue right now.” Dee said.
“Alright, let’s head there now.” I said.
I got back in my car and headed for the hospital. When I got there, Dee, Zo, and Antonio were all behind me. I didn’t really wonder were Reggie was, and didn’t care. I walked through the hospital doors, past the security officers and toward the morgue. Despite hearing “you can’t go in there”, I walked in through the doors anyway. That’s when I saw her body on one of the tables in the center of the room. As soon as I did, I felt my stomach drop.
As I looked over her half covered body, I could no longer hold back the tears. Regardless of whatever happened between us, this was my mama lying on a table in front of me, dead. A million thoughts rushed through my head at the same time until I noticed a small scar on her neck. When I pulled back the cover and looked at her hands and uncovered stomach, all of the hurt turned into anger and frustration. As I turned and walked back to the door where Dee, Alonzo, Antonio and now Reggie, who I barely noticed was back, were standing, I spoke low. “Somebody murdered her. They killed her.” Silently I retraced my path out of the hospital.
“I knew that overdose shit was fake.” Dee said walking behind me.
As we headed to the front of the hospital, I said nothing else. Dee and Antonio walked behind me. Alonzo and Reggie stopped by the sidewalk as Reggie hung up his cell phone.
“Bro, hold up.” Alonzo said as they caught up to the rest of us. “Reggie just finished talking to one of his
